GBU stands for Guided Bomb Unit—a family of precision-guided bombs used by U.S. Air Force and Navy. Each GBU pairs a conventional bomb body with a guidance kit (laser, GPS, or both) to hit targets with far greater accuracy than unguided bombs.
GBU-8/B (Paveway I) is a 1000-pound laser-guided bomb built around the Mk 84 general-purpose bomb. It uses a semi-active laser seeker; a designated aircraft shines a laser on the target, and the bomb homes to the reflected energy, guiding to impact. It requires continuous laser designation until impact and offers improved accuracy at standoff ranges.
